On Friday, 9 May, at a meeting of the Judicial Council, the Director of the Academy of Justice, Laila Jurcēna, informed about the progress made in the first months of the Academy's operation.

Since the launch of the Academy of Justice on 1 January 2025, 662 participants have been trained and 41 training events have been implemented. The training topics cover various issues of importance and relevance to judges, prosecutors and court staff. Director Jurcēna emphasised that the training is organised in a flexible way, which allows the content to be adapted to the needs and specificities of the work of judicial professionals.

Alongside the training process, the Academy is actively working to ensure that the institution can fully fulfil its functions. The premises of the Academy are being furnished, budgetary issues are being addressed, the necessary information systems have been put in place, and internal regulations have been developed to ensure the efficient and sustainable functioning of the institution.

The Academy of Justice cooperates purposefully with state institutions, Latvian universities, as well as judges and prosecutors. International cooperation is also strengthened, and the training and development activities offered by the Academy of European Law and the European Judicial Training Network are used.

The Judicial Council also appointed Judge Sandra Gintere as Deputy President of the Regional Administrative Court for a five-year term. Sandra Gintere has been working at the Regional Administrative Court for 20 years. She has been a member of the Latvian Association of Administrative Judges since its establishment in 2009 and had also been a member of its Board for two years. In 2013, for her long-standing professional contribution to the justice system, Sandra Gintere was awarded the 2nd Degree and the Certificate of Recognition from the Ministry of Justice and the symbolic award ‘Silver Feather’.

According to the Law on the Academy of Justice, the Judicial Council exercises functional supervision over the Academy of Justice.

The Judicial Council takes decisions on the appointment of presidents and deputy presidents of district (city) courts and regional courts, and presidents of courthouses on the basis of an opinion given by the Commission in advance. The Judicial Qualification Committee has given a favourable opinion on the nomination of Sandra Gintere.
